MARYLEBONE AREA The West End of London is famous for Soho and theatre land, but also has several other districts such as St. James - that is mainly art and antiques with the Christies auction rooms. The area to the North of Oxford Street is centred around Marylebone High Street and has developed over the past 20 years into one of the main eating and boutique shopping areas of London. It is now considered to be the new Chelsea, and is bustling with life. There is one of the finest collections of porcelain and ancient armour at the Wallace Collection, housed in Manchester House, which itself has several lecture theatres that are used for arts programmes, and where there is an excellent restaruant in the atrium. The centre. Marylebone has the expansive Regent's Park to the North, the largest open space in central London, and additionally some other lovely small gardens such as the Paddington Street gardens. All the streets around of Marylebone High Street are of superb architectual design. To the East of the High Street is the medical district of Wimpole Street and Harley Street. These streets widen out as they head North to Regent's Park, giving a lovely sense of proportion and grandeur. It is an area that you will find many of the London's leading surgeons and specialist doctors use for consulting rooms.
